So the last few months have been a busy period for Malaysian Ultimate. The end of the inaugural Malaysian Ultimate League (admittedly a misnomer, since it involved only teams from the Klang Valley) and the largest, bestest, most awesomest MUO EVER. EVAH EVAH. The MUL saw the KBU kids take top spot, with the Flying Naans second, and Satu Lagi third. Due to a scheduling conflict, the final play off day couldn’t be executed, so the league ended with a friendly hat and on-field barbeque. Nice one. It was a good break from the usual high-intensity matches, being able to mess around on the fields with still a relatively high standard of play. Congratulations once more to KBU! Here’s hoping that MUL 2010 will see an extension of the amount of teams involved. The committee honestly believes that the key to a strong Ultimate showing at international tournaments is a strong, competitive local league, which is exactly what MUL hopes to provide. At MUO 2009, we saw just how much work needs to be put in before Malaysian teams can challenge at an international level. The finals between Freakshow Green and Disc Knights (both from Singapore) was an exemplary example (check out that mad English skillz) of athleticism, stamina, precision, and mental fortitude. FSG went 5-2 down, stunned by the long hucks and speed of the DKs, but fought back, scoring 7 in a row, with a combination of patience and methodical passing to wear down the DK rabbit-and-a-wall defense. At 9-5 the DKs pulled back to 9-8, but were ultimately undone by FSG’s greater patience and experience, as they closed the game out at 13-9. Kudos to both teams for putting on such an exhibition of varying styles of Ultimate. That sentence seems grammatically challenged but I don’t really care. The 3rd- 4th placing match was abandoned in favour of a boat race, Shiok (Singapore) and the Soidawgz (Bangkok) slugging it out. Shiok took 3rd, but only just (brought to you by Finnegan’s). Special mention must be made to St. John’s ambulance, which so graciously provided first aid treatment for the many inevitable bumps and knocks. Also to the kebaya girls who volunteered to help with scoring, time keeping, and handing out medals. The shy smitten looks of the Singapore National Youth Team players as they received their medals said it all. I swear I’ve never seen so many young kids blushing in a row. All together now, “awwww….” Second special thanks goes out to the dynamic commentary team, which kept the crowd entertained during the finals with deep, profound analysis of the playing teams. And third special thanks goes to our sponsors, Finnegan’s Irish Restaurant and Bar, i-amtv.com, Kittiwake, Olumis Borneo Batik House, and of course, Alice Smith International School, without which, we would not have such a nice venue. And also to the witch doctor we hired to keep the rain away. SUO, if you guys want his contact, call Kuan. The sprinkled goat’s blood gets a bit messy but the ground soon absorbs it. Photos from MUO 2009 will be released as soon as Miguel finishes burping his baby. And now, for the planning of MUL 2010. And maybe even MUC 2009. Watch this space, Malaysian Ultimate is on the march. |
